BENGALURU: While chief minister Basavaraj Bommai has already submitted a wishlist to the Centre, the state BJP unit is expecting big announcements in the Union budget, especially in the infrastructure sector, since elections are around the corner.
BJP also hopes Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman will designate the Rs 23,000-crore Upper Bhadra Project as a national project. The Jal Shaktiministry has already cleared the proposal and the state is awaiting the Union cabinet’s approval. If it is designated a national project, the Centre will fund 80% of the cost. If it comes through, the move is likely to benefit the party in a big way in the polls.
Former MLC and senior BJP functionary Ganesh Karnik said: “This government doesn’t believe in doling out freebies, but at the same time it has managed to take care of the basic needs of the lower strata of society, be it housing, sanitation, or their financial needs. I expect the same emphasis in tomorrow’s budget. We expect a positive push for quality infrastructure projects like highways, ports, Namma Metro, and suburban rail. ”
Congress and JD(S) said they expect little from the budget and pointed out that the Centre has failed to implement announcements made in previous budgets. Opposition leader Siddaramaiah, in a tweet said: “The people of #Karnataka have decided to bring back the Congress party in the upcoming elections in May. I have no expectations from Nirmala Sitharaman’s budget. It will be full of promises but none will be fulfilled. ”
Ramalinga Reddy, KPCC working president, said: “Look at the suburban rail project. Funds announced in last year’s budget are yet to be sanctioned. ” Sitharaman had allocated Rs 450 crore for the project last year.
KA Thippeswamy, JD(S) MLC, said since elections are around the corner, the Centre is likely to make announcements to woo voters. “I think there will be something about the Upper Bhadra project,” he said.
