Kcb To Repair Roads After Residents’ Plaints Pour In, ET Infra

PUNE: The Khadki Cantonment Board has decided to repair all roads under its jurisdiction following complaints from residents about pockmarked throughfares.

The board has finalised a tender of Rs2 crore to repair the roads. Robin Baleja, the chief executive officer of the Khadki Cantonment Board (KCB), told TOI, “We have been carrying out repair work regularly but that has been ineffective due to daily commuting. We have noted the citizens’ complaints. We will monitor the work closely and repair roads properly.”

KCB is located strategically on the city map. It connects the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation areas via the old Pune-Mumbai highway.

A significant volume of industrial traffic from twin towns passes through the KCB limits daily to access the Pune-Ahmednagar highway in the city limits.

Thus, the roads should be maintained in such a way that they can bear the movement of heavy vehicles, including containers and trucks, stressed some activists from Khadki.

A section of commuters claimed that the daily commute had become a nightmare because of the poor condition of roads, prompting traffic congestion. A section of them even raised questions on the efficiency of the cantonment authorities in maintaining roads properly.

“Every year, the cantonment authorities claim that they have spent crores on road repairs and maintenance. Then how come roads become so vulnerable in the monsoon period? Don’t they pay heed to the quality assurance while executing the repair or maintenance work? If they do it properly, we will not face this kind of situation every few months,” said Kishore Pawar, a resident of KCB.
