Kochi: The Kerala High Court has instructed the Kerala State Road Safety Authority (KSRSA) to function effectively to reduce the number of road accidents. The state, central governments together with the KSRSA should function like a single entity to achieve this, the division bench, including Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Sahji P Chali, noted.

The court also instructed to hand over the funds for KSRSA in a timely manner.

“The increasing number of roads accidents are a concern,” the court observed. It also issued over 10 measures to reduce accidents.

The HC was considering the petition filed by CA Xavier of Chalakudy, State Human Rights Protection Centre Thrissur and Saji J Kodangadath raising issues of road safety.

The suggestions by HC:

  • KSRSA and other institutions concerned should take measures to reduce road accidents immediately
  • Tree branches and other materials on roadside posing danger to vehicles should be cut within three months
  • Any construction material (useless) deposited on roadside or pedestrian path should be removed within three months
  • The land identified for road widening should be taken over immediately within four months paying compensation. If the owner is not willing, notice should be served and action should be taken within a month
  • The central and state governments should extend help to KSRSA for the above action
  • The state, central and KSRSA should function in association to avoid various agencies from frequent digging of the road
  • KSRSA should take stern action against those violating road safety guidelines issued by the authority or the government
  • KSRSA should ensure proper functioning of local self-government bodies with regard to road safety
  • KSRSA should also ensure proper and timely compensation to those deserving persons and families involved in road accidents
