Various Left Front-backed organisations, led by the Democratic Youth Federation of India, staged a massive protest in front of the headquarters of the Eastern Railways in Kolkata on Thursday. The protest was held over the recent job losses in the Indian Railways.
“Almost 80,000 jobs were abolished by the Railway Ministry in the past few years. They are creating unemployment more than creating job opportunities. The government wants to sell the Railways. If private organisations operate Railways, what happens if the prices of tickets are raised ? Will the common man be able to afford that? asked Srijan Bhattacharjee, CPI (M) leader.
The left organisations claimed that Railways should serve the people and not private organisations as millions depend on Railways on a daily basis.
POSITIONS LIKELY TO BE REINSTATED
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has been asked by Rajya Sabha MP from Kerala Dr V Sivadasan to reinstate around 72,000 positions that Indian Railways has abolished over the last six years. Indian Railways is said to be India’s biggest job provider, employing around 1.4 million people. The national transport also sees a massive rush in almost all recruitment drives.
