It’s time to celebrate a more ‘normal’ Fourth of July holiday. For the past two years, many communities altered plans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now many are gearing up for large patriotic celebrations to commemorate our country’s independence.
Families gather to begin the July Fourth 2021 Avon Bike Parade.
In Avon, in conjunction with the Lake Erie Crushers, two fireworks displays are planned for after the baseball games July 2-3 (@9:30 p.m.) at Mercy Health Stadium, 2009 Baseball Blvd. The July 3 display is presented by the city. Tickets for the games are still available. Go to lakeeriecrushers.com. While you can still see the fireworks from outside the stadium, what better way to celebrate the holiday than watching America’s pastime.
As part of the city’s Independence Day celebration, Avon will also host its annual Avon Bike Parade at 10 a.m. July 4 at the Avon Aquatic Facility. The parade will feature decorated bicycles, scooters, wagons and tricycles. Riders are encouraged to use a patriotic theme to celebrate the Fourth of July. Special parade escorts include the Avon police and fire departments.
The parade will start and end at the Avon Aquatic Facility, 36265 Detroit Road. Riders will embark on a one-mile route down Healthway Drive and then back to the Avon Aquatic Facility. The public is invited to line Healthway Drive to watch the parade.
Participants in the parade will get one complimentary weekday admission pass to the Avon Pool, good from July 4 through the end of the summer season. The parade is open to participants of all ages and is free for attendees.
Avon Lake is planning a big party to kick off the holiday weekend July 1 Weiss Field, 33401 Webber Road, with fireworks at 10 p.m. Several bands will be performing before the display including Seeing Scarlet, winner of the Tri-C High School Rock Off, at 5:30 p.m. The band features students from Avon Lake High School. Avon Lake’s own Anne E. DeChant takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. The headliner for the evening is The Dave Matthews Tribute Band at 8 p.m.
Food trucks at the event include Jones Bones BBQ, Cafe Melissa’s, Boss ChicknBeer, Fired Up Tacos, Cathy’s Cle, Kona Ice and Kountry Krunchins.
The rain date for fireworks is July 5.
North Ridgeville’s Freedom Festival and Fireworks, sponsored by the city and Pepco Elyria, is July 3 at Victory Park Ohio, 7777 Victory Lane. Gates open at 5 p.m. with activities, entertainment, food and beverages, and fireworks at approximately 10 p.m. Tickets are per vehicle. To purchase, go to victoryparkohio.com. Net proceeds benefit North Ridgeville Community Care and the Canine Superheroes Foundation. In 2021, Victory Park Ohio presented North Ridgeville Community Care with a check for $7,500 from the event.
In advance of the July Fourth holiday, TrueNorth Cultural Arts will present a free Patriotic Concert at 7 p.m. June 25 at Bay United Methodist Church, 29931 Lake Road. The TrueNorth Chorale and Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Richard Fortney, will perform in the sanctuary. The concert is open to the public and donations will be accepted to help offset costs.
More than 40 musicians will perform patriotic favorites such as “America the Beautiful”, “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, “When the Saints Go Marching In”, “Stars and Stripes Forever”, and “God Bless America”.
A special tribute will take place for the Armed Services asking all who have served to stand and be recognized. The concert will recognize the men, women and family of the armed services, local police and firemen/women, and scouts. According to information from TrueNorth Cultural Arts, the evening will serve as a time of reflection and hope, celebrating the past, praying for our future, as we celebrate our freedom.
AVON
BIBIBOP coming: Avon will soon be home to a BIBIBOP Asian Grill location at the French Creek Square shopping plaza (corner of Detroit Road and State Route 83) in the space formerly occupied by Verizon (the store moved a few doors down in the plaza). The Columbus-based Asian food brand has been expanding over years since opening its first location in 2013. The location will be the 45th for BIBIBOP nationwide and joins seven other Cleveland-area locations including Crocker Park, Fairview Park and Strongsville.
At BIBIBOP, guests build their own bowl filled with the fresh ingredients such as rib steak or antibiotic-free chicken, vegetables, rice, potatoes, and flavorful sauces including sweet and tangy Yum Yum or a spicy Korean favorite, Gochujang. Vegetarian and vegan-friendly meals are also available. BIBIBOP was also named a Gluten-Free Safe Spot, certifying each location as 100 percent gluten-free.
An opening date has not yet been announced, but BIBIBOP officials are hopeful the Avon location will open by the end of the year. For more information, go to bibibop.com.
Farm stand closed this summer: Many have been wondering if the popular Nagel Farm stand (33294 Detroit Road) will open for the summer season. A recent post on the Nagel’s Farm and Pumpkin Patch Facebook group explains, “Nagel farm property is in the process of being sold to a developer. In this time off, our younger Nagel Family generations are taking the time to spend with our children while we work on regrouping and planning for a future in farming. Stay tuned for further future information here. We have truly loved being a part of your lives and look forward to finding a way to continue in them in the future! As of now the 2022 summer season will not be happening.”
Miller Nature Preserve display: Follow the yellow brick road to the Miller Nature Preserve, 2739 Center Road, and explore themed gardens and displays inspired by the Wizard of Oz. Outdoor garden beds will highlight the story’s main characters, while other scenes will be depicted within the Conservatory. The Miller Nature Preserve Conservatory is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $2 per person ages 3 and up. Annual Memberships are available for $10; membership benefits include unlimited entry into the Conservatory and discounts on many programs and events.
The Butterfly House is also open daily from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. now through Labor Day (Sept. 5). It is free to enter (donations accepted).
Road resurfacing: Expect delays and plan accordingly as the Jaycox Road resurfacing project is underway and will take approximately 60 days to complete (weather permitting). The project extends from Mills Road northward to just east of the Jaycox Road and Schwartz Road intersection.
The scope of the project is to mill away the existing asphalt surface, widen the roadway approximately one foot on each side (for safety and uniformity), perform needed base repairs, and then place down a new asphalt driving surface.
The work zone will change based on which part of the road the contractor is working on at any given time. The intent is to maintain traffic with the use of flaggers during the workday and then return the road to full operation the rest of the time.
Republican breakfast: The Avon-Avon Lake Republican Club will gather for breakfast from 8 to 9 a.m. July 6 at the Sugar Creek Restaurant, 5196 Detroit Road (Sheffield Village Plaza). Paul Baumgartner, executive director of Lorain County Free Clinic, will speak about the volunteer-based clinic that provides a wide range of medical services to those patients falling through the gaps in the healthcare system. Future breakfasts will occur on the first Wednesdays of the month to help residents get to know fellow Republicans. Candidates and office holders may also attend to socialize. Guests are welcome. Each attendee is responsible for their own meal.
Football golf outing: Registration is open for the Avon Football Golf Outing July 9 at Bob-O-Links, 4141 Center Road. Proceeds benefit the 2022 Avon football season. The shotgun start begins at 9 a.m. Cost is $400 per foursome, or $100 individual golfer to be placed on a team. For more information and to register, go to bit.ly/3QDX5vF.

Fishing with Friends: Enjoy Fishing with Friends weekly Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walker Road Park, 31621 Walker Road. Park Attendants were trained by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources in tying knots, setting up fishing poles, removing hooks and other tips on keeping the fish alive for their release. Erie Outfitters is providing the bait for the free fishing, for families with kids ages 15 and under. Fish in the pond include Bluegill, Bass and Catfish (catch and release).
All youth under age 18 must have a signed permission form completed during or prior to their first fishing experience with the Avon Lake Parks and Recreation Department. Children under 12-years-old must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible person, 14- years-old or older. Children under 6-years-old need to have a responsible individual within arm’s reach at all times. Extreme weather may force fishing to be canceled, but light rain should not. Check the Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page for updates.

NORTH RIDGEVILLE
Food truck wars canceled: Unfortunately the North Ridgeville Parks and Recreation’s Food Truck Wars that was scheduled for July 9 has been canceled due to the low number of applications received.
Shred Day: Gather up any documents or papers you need to have shredded and bring them to Shred Day from 9 a.m. to noon June 25 at the North Ridgeville North Ridgeville Senior Center parking lot, 7327 Avon Belden Road.
Summer concert: Enjoy a free concert featuring the popular 70s band Disco Inferno from 5 to 8 p.m. June 26 at the South Central Park Gazebo, 7565 Avon Belden Road. Weather cancellation will be posted on the city’s Parks and Recreation department Facebook page, or call the rainout line at 440-210-6226.
Construction updates: Several construction projects are underway throughout the city. Lorain Road Water Main Extension project is scheduled to be completed Sept. 1. The outside eastbound lane on Lorain Road will be closed from Bliss Parkway up to the intersection at Cook Road. Business access will be maintained throughout the project. The project includes extending a 12-inch water main off of the 30-inch water transmission line operated by Avon Lake Regional Water in front of the University Hospitals property. The 12-inch water main will be extended across Lorain Road then run along the south side of Lorain Road and tie into the existing 12-inch water main across Cook Road. Disruption to water service will be minimal and businesses will be given a 48-hour notice.
Work on repairing 18 catch basins along Meadow Lakes Boulevard and Avalon Drive is expected to be completed within the next few weeks (weather permitting).
Fitness equipment: The North Ridgeville Parks and Recreation Department recently announced the unveiling of five new pieces of outdoor fitness equipment installed around the North Ridgeville Heart & Sole Fitness Trail located at Shady Drive Complex. Snider Recreation has installed a Single Elliptical Cross Trainer, Four-person Pendulum, Abs & Dip Station, Two-Person Back & Arms Combo, Two-Person Lat Pull-Down & Vertical Press Combo, and a Three-Person Static Combo (sit-up, pull-up, dip station).
LORAIN COUNTY
Photo exhibits: Members of the Pioneer Ridge Photography Club, a community club at the Del Webb Pioneer Ridge in North Ridgeville, will share photographs that explore the diversity and beauty of nature at the French Creek Nature Center, 4530 Colorado Avenue, Sheffield Village. Many of the photographs have been taken at Lorain County Metro Parks, as well as locations throughout the country. The exhibit runs through June 30.
Another gallery exhibit running now through June 30 features photographs by Avon Lake resident Ron Jantz. The French Creek Nature Center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
