MUMBAI: Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has appointed a contractor for the construction of a depot for Metro Line 5—Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan—at Kasheli. The contractor, Ritwik Projects, will undertake construction of the depot at a cost of Rs 589 crore on 27 hectares of land.

The 24.9km stretch of Metro Line 5 is being developed in two phases. Construction work for the first phase, covering a 11.9km route between Thane and Bhiwandi, is almost 80% complete. Work on the depot is expected to be completed by March 2026.

The car depot at Kasheli is a critical facility for commissioning and maintaining Metro corridors. It will serve various functions such as operations, train parking and repairs, heavy equipment handling and testing, cleaning and periodic inspections.

The Kasheli depot will also play a key role in the inspection and testing of all sub-assemblies, conducting repair testing, and restoring subsystems to their original state. It will have a parking capacity for approximately 30 cars simultaneously and feature facilities such as a stabling yard, a hazard store building, a heavy wash plant, an underground tank, a depot control centre, administrative and central store buildings, a workshop and inspection building, a receiving substation, a test track, and effluent treatment and sewage treatment plants.

It will be equipped to handle heavy components such as traction motors, axles, gear cases and axle boxes.

Metropolitan commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said, “The appointment of a contractor for the construction of the car depot for Metro Line 5 marks an important milestone in the development of this Metro corridor. Once completed, this route will provide direct and convenient access to an area that was previously underserved by the suburban railway network. We anticipate that approximately three lakh passengers will utilize this metro route, fostering rapid development in the region.”
