COIMBATORE: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday virtually flagged off the Vande Bharat train from Coimbatore to Bengaluru in Karnataka. While an express train usually takes seven hours to cover the distance of 380km between the two destinations, the Vande Bharat train would take only five hours and 30 minutes to cover the same.

This is the fifth Vande Bharat train for Tamil Nadu and the second one for Coimbatore. The existing services are between Chennai and Coimbatore, Chennai and Tirunelveli, Chennai and Vijayawada, and Chennai and Mysuru.

The train would leave Coimbatore at 5am and reach Bengaluru at 11.30am from January 1, 2024. In the return journey, the train would leave Bangaluru at 8pm and reach Coimbatore by midnight. The ticket fare is fixed at ₹1,025 for chair car and ₹1,910 for executive class.

Coimbatore MP P R Natarajan, Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan and others participated in the inaugural ceremony that was held at the city railway station in the afternoon.

While hailing the new service between the Manchester City of South India and the Silicon Valley of India, Natarajan requested the Southern Railway to consider the timing of Uday Express, as it collides with that of the newly-launched Vande Bharat train. He said the Uday Express could be made a night train.

Welcoming the fifth Vande Bharat train for Tamil Nadu, state BJP president K Annamalai said, “These (Vandhe Bharat) trains stand as a testament to the fast-paced development through high-speed interconnectivity of cities as envisioned by the Prime Minister.”

On X, he thanked Union railways minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for being the “harbinger of implementing developmental schemes and translating the visions of Modi”.
