New Delhi: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has given in principle approval to a Rs 85 crore project for revamp of 41 roads and roundabouts, pavements and green berms, installing 250 solar bollards for illumination of pedestrian walkways, sculptures and improving toilet facilities.
The aim is to improve the look of the area prior to the G20 summit, which will start at the end of the year. The agency implementing the project would be responsible for maintaining the facilities for the next one year. Another proposal for dense carpeting of eight roads was also cleared in the council meeting on Wednesday.
“We have received several correspondences from the G20 Secretariat and other higher authorities related to upgrading and improvement of infrastructure in the NDMC area in view of the G20 Presidency and its related events in New Delhi. Accordingly, 41 major roads having the maximum impact have been identified and a proposal prepared for their redevelopment,” said NDMC vice-chairman Satish Upadhyay.
Being specialised work, sculpture and art promotion work would be designed and executed separately.
Giving the highlights of the project, NDMC member Kuljeet Chahal said the roads would be developed on a par with international standards.
“Sardar Patel Road, which connects IGI Airport to Lutyens’ Delhi, will be our main focus. Besides the provision for aesthetic railings next to the Ridge, installing sculptures on the theme of Indian heritage and green artwork will be done on the roadsides. There will be 250-500 solar light bollards of four feet to illuminated pavements and 4,800 smart streetlights-cum-pillars will be integrated with NDMC’s control and command centre,” added Chahal.
Safdarjung and Ranjit Singh flyovers and NDMC and adjoining buildings would be illuminated with solar lighting systems and decorative flowers and exotic plants would be planted on both sides of roads. Replacing existing signage with LED ones in consultation with Indian Road Congress would be a part of the project.
The 41 roads include Lodhi Road, Sardar Patel Road, Shahjahan Road, Janpath, Prithviraj Road, APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Africa Avenue, roads in Connaught Place, Malcha Marg, Vinay Marg, Ashoka Road, Barakhamba, Ferozshah Road (KG Marg to Windsor Place and Mandi House), Tilak Marg, Baba Kharak Singh Marg, Zakir Hussain Marg, Pant Marg, Rafi Marg and Mother Teresa Crescent (south and north side).
“During an inspection, it was observed that some avenue roads had deteriorated over a five-year period. A decision was taken for complete strengthening and resurfacing of these avenue roads with cold milling process. The roads include Tilak Marg, KG Marg, Dr Zakir Hussain Marg, Pandara Road, Tolstoy Marg, Hailey Road, Tansen Marg and Babar Road,” said Upadhyay.
