PANJIM: AICC senior Goa Election Observer P Chidambaram congratulated Herald in its editorial on the Ports Authority Act and the Centre making MPT into Mormugao Port Authority.

The Herald editorial ‘It’s an authority that Goans didn’t want’ cites opposition to the move where MPA will now have unchallenged powers, bypassing the jurisdiction of the State government and its authorities such as the CRZ, PDA etc.

Chidambaram said BJP is used to doing things that people are opposed to, and it does things that are opposed to people’s interest. This is the kind of politics and administration the BJP practices, he said. “They do it using their brute administrative and political power,” Chidambaram added.

“We are totally opposed to it,” AICC senior Goa Election Observer said.

Asked why Congress South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha did not oppose the bill in Parliament, Chidambaram said he will look into why his own party MP from South Goa was silent in the Parliament when the Ports Authority Bill was passed. “I don’t know at what stage the bill is. I’ll have to ask him, I’m not aware about the stage of the bill,” he admitted.

When pointed out that the Ports Authorities Bill was already passed, Chidambaram said, we hope to challenge the Act and will find a way to challenge the Act in courts.
