COIMBATORE: Pollachi MP K Shanmugasundaram on Friday demanded that Railways develop Podanur station into the second terminal in Coimbatore. He was speaking at an MPs’ meeting in Madurai. Railway officials, including Southern Railway general manager R N Singh, also participated in the meeting.

The MP said development of Podanur station would help decongest Coimbatore Junction, which could not be expanded due to space crunch.

He demanded reopening of Chettipalayam and Kovilpalayam stations. He wanted the officials to reconstitute the 23km stretch between Kinathukadavu and Pollachi to either Salem division or Madurai division. The stretch at present comes under the Palakkad division. He said the Pollachi railway station has lost its distinctiveness after it was merged with Palakkad division.

He said that construction of two subways on the Podanur-Kanjikode section would not help tackle elephant accidents. He demanded construction of an elevated corridor on the entire section.

Since Mettupalayam-Tirunelveli special train is successful, it should be regularised with increase in frequency. Trains should be introduced on the Villupuram-Mettupalayam route via delta districts. He also demanded operation of overnight trains to Tiruchendur, Rameswaram and Tuticorin.

He urged official to run MEMU trains between Pollachi and Mettupalayam via Coimbatore, Pollachi and Palakkad and Pollachi and Erode via Tirupur.
