Why does a grey market tend to develop around a car that has a high waiting period? While Maruti says it has taken all the necessary measures to oust the middlemen and out-of-turn deliveries, there are consumer complaints about unsavoury market elements asking for extra money for a faster delivery.

Vikram Guleria (name changed on request) had booked a Maruti Suzuki Brezza smart hybrid LXI with a Gurugram dealership on September 30, 2022. He wanted it before his wedding in January 2023. The booking receipt did mention a waiting period of 24-26 weeks. However, the dealer assured that he would try and deliver the car by the marriage day.
