Public ropeway near Kashi corridor among 28 projects launched by PM Modi in Varanasi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday laid the foundation stone of a passenger ropeway from Varanasi Cantonment station to Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, besides launching and inaugurating 27 other development projects worth over a total of Rs 1,780 crore. The 3.75-kilometre ropeway project, estimated to cost Rs 645 crore, will have five stations and facilitate the ease of movement for tourists, pilgrims and residents.

Addressing a public gathering during the launch event in his , the PM said around “7 crore tourists visited Kashi in the last one year”, after the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor was inaugurated in February 2022.

“The ropeway will greatly reduce travel time between Varanasi railway station and Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, increasing convenience. The ropeway project will be available with several facilities like parking. This will also emerge as an employment generator. Besides, a floating jetty will soon be constructed for devotees and tourists visiting the city,” PM Modi said, adding his government has also worked towards enhancing air connectivity by establishing an ATC tower at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport.

He went on to recount the development works undertaken in the holy city over the last 8-9 years, saying the speed with which “Banaras is developing, now the time has come to give it a new pace”.

“Development works of Kashi are discussed across the nation. Banarasi saree, wooden toys and many more things are famous among the tourists. Today Varanasi has several development projects, from clean water, education and rejuvenation of the Ganga, to sports facilities. An international cricket stadium will be built in the city soon, which will promote sports in Varanasi,” PM Modi added.

Prime Minister also said Uttar Pradesh is rising from the earlier hopelessness towards a state of hope and aspiration under the Yogi Adityanath government.

Here are the other projects that PM Modi laid foundation stones for or inaugurated at the programme held on Sampurnanand Sanskrit University ground, in presence of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and governor Anandiben Patel:

  1. Foundation stone for a 55 million litres per day sewage treatment plant at Bhagwanpur under the Namami Gange scheme, to be built at an estimated cost of Rs 300 crore.
  2. Foundation stone of the Phase 2 and Phase 3 redevelopment work of Sigra Stadium under the Khelo India scheme.
  3. Dedicated 19 drinking water schemes that will benefit over three lakh people in 63 panchayats under the Jal Jeevan Mission. The prime minister also laid the foundation stone of 59 drinking water schemes under the mission.
  4. Foundation stone of LPG bottling plant at Isarwar village, Sewapuri, to be built by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.
  5. Foundation stone of various other projects including primary health centre in Bharthara village and floating jetty with changing rooms.
