Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to flag off passenger trains to Nilagiri, ET Infra

BHUBANESWAR: Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday will flag off a MEMU train to Nilagiri in Balasore district. He will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of other railway projects at Betanoti in Mayurbhanj district.

He will dedicate the Balasore-Gopinathpur Nilagiri passenger line, around 20km stretch. “With the inauguration of a new passenger line between Gopinathpur Nilgiri and Balasore, the people of this area will be able to avail passenger train services for the first time,” said the official statement of the East Coast Railway (ECoR).

Three pairs of MEMU trains will run on this route daily. The railway line was opened in 1909 before the independence of India. It was owned by a private company to use this line for granite transportation from Nilagiri to Kolkata. Later the line was left unused.

On January 7, 2022 Vaishnaw inspected the Balasore-Nilagiri railway line by travelling on an inspection carriage and laid foundation stone for making the line fit for running of passenger trains. He had assured the people of that area to run passenger trains on that route.

Station building has been developed and it has required passenger amenities. There is a booking counter at this station. It is a beautiful station having hills and farmlands in its background, said a railway officer.

The railway minister will also inaugurate a new passenger reservation system (PRS) counter at Betnoti station in Mayurbhanj station. “It will be beneficial for the passengers of the area for booking reserved tickets,” said the ECoR.

As a part of providing more passenger amenities and safety, a subway will be constructed at Betnoti station. Vaishnaw will lay foundation stone of this subway. It will ensure smooth entry and exit of passengers to the station. Local residents can commute through the subway without crossing the railway track, said the statement issued by the ECoR on Friday.
