A recent spell of heavy pre-monsoon rains has wreaked havoc with road infrastructure in Rawalpindi.
The recent rains have damaged more than 200 main and connecting roads in the city with large potholes visible on main highways, causing an interruption in smooth traffic flow.
The recent pre-monsoon rains have caused severe damage to the road infrastructure due to the accumulation of rainwater on the main highways in the city and Cantonment areas.
Over 200 roads including Murree Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Nogza Road, Kamran Market Road, Akbar Market Road, Liaquat Road, Iqbal Road, College Road, Rawal Road, Commercial Market Road, Syedpur. Road, Sixth Road, Sadiqabad Road, Kurry Road, Shakrial Road, Double Road, Dhok Rata Road, Bakery Chowk, Loco Shed Road, Range Road, Misryal Road, Dhamyal Road, Chowk No. 22, Tench Bhatta Road, Gawalmandi Road, Dhok Saidan Road, Kalma Chowk, Dungi Khoi Road, Jamia Masjid Road, Bani Chowk and Band Khanna Road have been damaged by the rains.
Muhammad Azeem, a resident of Dhok Rata, said that Dhok Rata Road has badly been damaged by the recent rains as heavy goods transport from the IJP passes through this road. He said that the delays in repair work will only aggravate the problem.
Raja Ismail, a resident of Gawalmandi, said that the recent rains have played havoc with Gawalmandi Road. He said that the condition of other highways in the city was also bad. Motorists have been forced to take alternate and long routes to reach their destinations as they prefer to avoid potholes on several roads.
Rawalpindi district administration officials said that the damaged roads in the city and Cantonment areas were being assessed and the report will be sent to the Punjab government for funds.
