Rudrapur: Rudrapur MLA Rajkumar Thukral on Saturday barely escaped a gunshot when trying to mitigate a clash, while another person was injured. The one who fired the gun, identified as Taran Singh Kahlon, fled the site, leaving his car behind, which has been seized by police.
According to Thukral, BJP MLA from Rudrapur, he was returning home around 10:30pm on Saturday when he saw two people in two cars arguing. The two vehicles had collided and the drivers confronted each other. One of them was known to him. It was Bhola Chabra, a former member of the Block Development Committee and a resident of Ramkot village.
“I saw two people sitting in two cars were engaged in a heated argument. When I tried to intervene after recognizing Chabra, the other person took out a pistol and fired at me. I backed off and escaped but the person fired a second time, this time hitting Chabra near the temple,” Thukral said. Chabra was taken to the district hospital in a critical condition.
Thukral said he had dropped off his security guards at their homes by the time he reached the spot of the incident. “I called the SSP and police teams reached the spot. The assailant had fled but his car was seized.”
SSP Daleep Singh Kunwar said it was a case of “road rage”. “The two cars had collided and led to a heated argument between the drivers, which ended in one shooting at the other. Chabra is currently undergoing treatment. We have identified the accused and a hunt to nab him is on,” said SSP Kunwar.
