MANGALURU: Paschima Karavali Railway Yatri Abhivridhi Samiti has appealed to the Southern Railway to extend Mangaluru Central-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express to Mumbai.
In a memorandum to the Southern Railway, Chennai, the samiti has said that Vande Bharat Express trains have now emerged as the preferred choice for travellers across the nation on account of its notable features such as speed, comfortable seating arrangement and good services being offered to passengers on board, besides reduction in travel hours to reach the destination.
“People of coastal Karnataka have been demanding a Vande Bharat express service from Mangaluru to Mumbai, which was partially fulfilled with the introduction of a train between Mangaluru and Madgaon from Dec 30, 2023. At present, there is no substantial number of passenger movement between Mangaluru and Madgaon.
Only during weekends and holidays, there is a demand for the destination. At present, a large number of people are travelling between Mangaluru and Mumbai. Hence, if train No. 20645/46 Mangaluru Central-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express is extended to Mumbai, it would help passengers of the region,” said samiti president Hanumanth Kamath.
Further, he suggested the Southern Railway may extend train No. 22229/30 Mumbai-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express to Mangaluru Central by integrating the existing rake of train No. 20645/46 Mangaluru-Madgaon Vande Baharat Express, duly augmenting its coach capacity from present eight to 16 numbers.
He added that at present two stoppages have been given for Mangaluru Central-Madgaon Vande Bharat Express at Udupi and Karwar. There is a need for allowing stoppages for the train at Mookambika Road at Byndoor in Udupi as well as Kumta in Uttar Kannada, which are important tourist places in coastal districts, Kamath said.
