Scheduled to be Operational by February 2024, Infra News, ET Infra

BOKARO: Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has informed Dhanbad MP P N Singh that the upcoming Bokaro airport could only commence operations for ATR-72 type aircraft by early next year.

In a letter to Singh, Scindia stated that the Bokaro airport has been selected under the Centre’s Udan scheme for commercial flights between Kolkata and Patna. A month earlier, Singh had sought a progress report from the civil aviation ministry on the Bokaro airport project, which falls under the jurisdiction of his constituency.

“The construction work related to the operation of ATR-72 type aircraft has been completed. The process of providing license to the airport for flight operations is underway and is likely to be completed by February 2024. Once approved, the Selected Airline Operator (SAO) can start operating flights connecting Bokaro to Kolkata and Patna,” Singh said, quoting Scindia’s letter.

The Centre’s Udan scheme, initiated in 2016, aims to provide connectivity to remote and hilly areas across the country at low airfares.

On Thursday, Singh said he had already written to Jharkhand chief secretary Sukhdev Singh about Scindia’s response and appealed to the government for the swift completion of the airport project.

“The construction work of the Bokaro airport is progressing at a very slow pace. Under this airport scheme, the state government must address issues such as security, health, and firefighting. So far, the work is not progressing in this direction. There has been a significant delay in the completion of this scheme from the scheduled deadline. Because of the delay, people in the region are expressing frustration as they wanted the air connectivity from their own region to other parts of the country,” the MP added.
