Chinese authorities have begun taking precautions with yet another typhoon approaching the Yangtze River Delta.
Barely a week after super typhoon Hinnamnor brushed past Shanghai, Typhoon Muifa is forecast to lash the world’s busiest container port and Ningbo, China’s second busiest container port, on 14 September.
China Meteorological Administration said that Muifa, the 12th typhoon this year, is expected to move in a north-westerly direction at a speed of 5 to 10 kilometres per hour, and will enter the southern part of the East China Sea after crossing Okinawa.
On 11 September, China’s Ministry of National Defense and Ministry of Emergency Management instructed ports to take precautions in advance, as heavy rain and strong winds are expected to hit Shanghai, as well as the provinces ofZhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong from today to 16 September.
Muifa, amid East Asia’s typhoon season, could be another blow to Shanghai’s logistics market after the city was locked down between March and June.
S&P Global’s Sea-web vessel-tracking data shows 167 container ships are destined for Shanghai, while Ningbo is expecting 88 container ships in the coming days.
Twenty-eight container ships are now in Shanghai, while there do not appear to be any such vessels in Ningbo now.
