CHENNAI: Southern Railway will complete electrification of 673 route kilometres of line — including Madurai-Manamadurai, Nagapattinam-Velankanni, and Trichy-Pudukottai — by March 2022.
The sections that will be electrified this year are:
Madurai-Manamadurai 45 route km, Nagapattinam-Velankanni 10 route km, Salem – Thalaivasal 73 route km, Pollachi – Podanur 38 route km, Thalaivasal-Vridhachalam 66 route km, Trichy-Pudukottai-Karaikudi 90 route km, Karaikudi-Manamadurai-Virudhunagar 124 route km, Manamadurai-Ramanathapuram 62 route km, Palakkad–Pollachi-Palani 121 route km and Kollam – Punalur 44 route km.
Around 70% of the route km of the railway network has been electrified by Southern Railway. The zone has a total of 5,080 route kilometers, of which 3,529 route km have been electrified as of March 2021.
Around 187 route km of lines were electrified in 2020-21.
The zone is planning electrification of all its broad gauge lines by December 2023.
Electrified lines will help railways operate heavier goods trains and lengthier passenger trains. It will also reduce operating cost, reduce carbon footprint, operate more trains on a route by eliminating detention of trains to change traction from diesel to electric or vice versa.
In a bid to speed up the work, the authorities will award large size engineering procurement and construction contracts, install better project monitoring mechanisms, get assured funds through extra budgetary resources of institutional finance and decentralise powers to field units.
