Tata Motors: Tata Motors’ Sanand plant crosses 1 million car rollout milestone


Tata Motors’ Sanand Plant in Gujarat, India, celebrated a significant milestone, reaching the production landmark of 1 million cars. The plant, which was established around 14 years ago to manufacture small cars, has evolved into a key facility for producing electric vehicles (EVs) and factory-fitted compressed natural gas (CNG) cars. According to Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, the Sanand-1 plant contributes to 20% of the company’s total car production.

Plant Evolution and Production Details

Production Evolution

The Sanand-1 plant commenced operations in January 2010, focusing initially on small car production. Over the years, it has transitioned to producing petrol, CNG, and electric powertrains. The plant has also increased its installed capacity from 1.35 lakh cars in 2010 to 1.9 lakh cars today, despite discontinuing the production of diesel cars.

Current Production Mix

Currently, the plant’s powertrain mix comprises 40% electric and petrol, respectively, and 20% CNG.Green InitiativesTata Motors is committed to making its operations more environmentally friendly. Approximately 50% of the power consumed in Sanand-1’s operations comes from renewable sources, with plans to achieve 100% green energy usage in the next three years.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

The company has adopted more than 68 villages around the plant, focusing on initiatives such as building toilets, skilling women, and promoting girl child education.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, Tata Motors aims to equip the plant to manufacture larger cars. The company plans to ensure that the plant has the flexibility to produce cars of any size, reducing vulnerability to shifts in market demand.

International Market Strategy

Tata Motors is gearing up to unveil its international vision strategy, with a focus on tapping into international markets more aggressively, particularly with enhanced safety features and electric cars.

Industry Outlook

Chandra expressed optimism about the industry, suggesting that the expected market support of 4.4 million units will provide a healthy level for sustained growth and investment in future products and capabilities.
