The policy debate that pits excellence against equity in healthcare is false. It’s possible & necessary to achieve both

In conventional imagination, excellence is seen as the top of a pyramid that one achieves after a lot of effort. Equity is generally imagined as a flat or horizontal structure which provides a level playing field. Conceptually, they appear to be the opposite of each other.

Focus on excellence, building more AIIMS-like institutions, is opposed by equity proponents. Promoting equity, reservation in jobs in health services, is seen as compromising excellence. Excellence is seen as an individual achievement while equity is seen as a societal necessity.
