The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai celebrates its 120th year


The Taj Mahal Palace opened in Mumbai, then Bombay, in 1903, and is now celebrating its 120 years. The recently trademarked hotel overlooks the Gateway of India having preceded it by 20 years.

Puneet Chhatwal, managing director and chief executive officer of IHCL said founded by Jamsetji Tata in 1903 and nurtured by the ‘visionary’ leaders of the Tata Group, Taj, continues to be a ‘legendary’ symbol of timeless hospitality.

“From pioneering landmark tourism destinations of Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala, Andamans and North-East to opening doors to India’s living grand Palaces, Taj rated as India’s Strongest Brand 2023 by Brand Finance is an icon that is both loved and sought after,” he added.

IHCL said in a statement that standing witness to the changing tides of time, it has played host to kings, dignitaries and eminent personalities from across the globe.”Its Indo-Saracenic architecture has become synonymous with city’s skyline, reflecting an amalgamation of traditions and modernity. Each of the rooms and suites are a striking blend of nostalgic elegance, rich history and contemporary conveniences,” IHCL said in a statement. Ritesh Sharma, general manager of The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai, said over more than a century, The Taj, as it is fondly called, has woven itself into the cultural fabric of Mumbai. “Its regal architecture, world-class amenities, and unwavering commitment to service has created an indelible mark in the hearts of our esteemed guests. We remain committed to offering the quintessential Taj service with genuine warmth, and care in the years ahead,” he added. In a series of commemorative events, the hotel will display the tales of the bygone era with a light and sound show on December 16n followed by Black-Tie Charity Ball on December 17. “In line with the founding principles of the TATA legacy, the event will raise funds to support IHCL’s CSR initiatives and Taj Public Service Welfare Trust,” IHCL said in a statement.
