JAMSHEDPUR: The Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCCI) has expressed disappointment over the district administration’s orders stating shopkeepers not following Covid protocols will be punished and their shops will be sealed.
Amid a surge in Covid cases, the administration has notified that shopkeepers must ensure that customers entering their shops wear masks and follow social distancing and other protocols.
SCCI officials said shopkeepers do not have any legal authority to ask customers to wear masks or maintain distancing and it is the duty of administration and special appointed magistrates to keep a tab on such things. They said shopkeepers are being harassed by the administration, making it difficult for them to run their business. SCCI sources said the duty of a businessman is to run his shops properly and not to maintain law and order. The administration can not run away from its responsibility and put the onus on shop owners, they said.
Meanwhile, officials visited several marketplaces in the city and those not wearing masks were let off after a warning. A jewellery shop in Sonari market was sealed for 24 hours after the owner was found not following the protocols.
