‘Unpaid’ Tourist Guide Gets His ‘Revenge’ By Staying In 5-Star Hotels, Fleeing Without Paying

Commissions are a common practice in the tourism and hospitality industry. From resorts and hotels to souvenir shops, everyone is expected to pay an amount to tourist guides, cab drivers and other agents in exchange for getting a customer.

But what happens if they refuse to pay?

In the case of Vincent John, he took ‘revenge’ not only on hotels that did not pay him but 5-star hotels across the country.

65-year-old arrested for not paying hotel bills

The Kerala Police on Sunday arrested 65-year-old John who fled from a 5-star hotel in Thiruvananthapuram, after staying there for days.

John had also taken a laptop from the hotel before he vanished.

He was arrested by the Kerala Police on Sunday from near the Kollam Railway station.

During the interrogation, it was revealed that John had committed similar fraud in many other states including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Goa.

The revenge of a tourist guide

According to the police, John, a native of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu used to work as a tourist guide and as part of his job he would regularly take guests to 5-star hotels.

However, some of them allegedly did not pay him any commission, following which John decided to get his revenge.

Enjoy 5-star accommodation for days and flee

John who had excellent command over English would show up in 5-star hotels, dressed up in impressive clothes.

With his experience in the industry and communication skills, he easily convinced the hotel staff to give him their most premium rooms, without making any advance payments.

John would then stay in these expensive rooms, enjoying the best food and drinks they have to offer.

After a couple of days, John would sneak out, claiming that he has a conference or a business meeting to attend.

By the time the hotel staff realise they have been duped, John would have already left the city.

According to the police John faced more than 200 cases of cheating in five-star hotels across the country, dating back to 2018 and most cases were in Mumbai.

How he was caught

In the Thiruvananthapuram hotel on whose complaint John was arrested, he had also taken a laptop on the pretext of attending an urgent meeting.

Before he left, John distributed sweets among the hotel staff and told them to arrange for a banquet for 100 people by the time he is back.

John was caught by the Thiruvananthapuram police who traced his mobile location to Kollam. The stolen laptop which he had sold for Rs 15,000 has also been recovered.
