DEHRADUN: The much- anticipated Vande Bharat Express train, connecting Dehradun to Delhi, is set to begin operations on May 25. This was announced recently by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami on his Twitter handle.

The state-of-the-art train is expected to significantly reduce the travel time between the two cities to just four and a half hours, making it the fastest option on the rail route to reach Dehradun from the national capital. Currently, six trains operate between the state capital and the national capital, namely Shatabdi, Jan Shatabdi, Uttaranchal Express, Mussoorie Express, Dehradun-Indore, Ujjain Express, and Nanda Devi AC Superfast which take between five and a half to over nine hours to cover the distance between the two cities.

Chandan Singh, chief inspector (ticket), said that the Vande Bharat train would be flagged off at 11 am on May 25 and will subsequently run daily from May 29. The inaugural ceremony will be conducted by Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and CM Dhami at Dehradun railway station. The Indian Railways is yet to announce the train’s schedule and fare.

Shashank Sharma, station superintendent, said, “The train will terminate at Delhi’s Anand Vihar railway station and complete the journey in four hours and thirty minutes. It is yet to be decided whether it will make a stop at Saharanpur or pass through Tapri Junction.”

According to railway officials, since the Vande Bharat Express has power on both ends, if it halts at Saharanpur station, there will be no need to change locomotives, unlike the Shatabdi Express. The Shatabdi Express currently takes six hours and ten minutes to reach New Delhi from Dehradun with a halt of 20 minutes at Saharanpur, while the Jan Shatabdi Express and Nanda Devi Express complete the journey in around five hours and fifty minutes.

Similarly, the Dehradun-Indore train takes eight hours, and the Mussoorie Express takes a maximum of nine hours and forty-five minutes.
