Visakhapatnam Smart City Project Nears Completion by June: GVMC, ET Infra


VISAKHAPATNAM: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation superintendent engineer (projects) M Vinay Kumar said that the implementation of the Visakhapatnam smart city project is progressing rapidly as the deadline for completion is fast approaching.

He said that the GVMC is putting all its efforts to complete the project by the given deadline of June 2024. He spoke to a group of journalists from Punjab who came to study the developmental programmes being undertaken by Union government under the “Vikasit Bharat Sankalp Yatra” (VBY).

This was part of a press tour organised by the Press Information Bureau Vijayawada unit. Vinay Kumar said that the objective of the smart cities project is to provide infrastructure, basic amenities, as well as smart solutions that improve the quality of life of the people in the city. He said that Visakhapatnam is one of the 20 smart cities identified by Union Government in the first phase.

The smart city project cost is ₹1,000 crore, with a 50:50 share of Union and state governments. He said that 57 of the 59 projects taken up have been completed and ₹649 crore has been spent so far.

He said that retrofitting, redevelopment, and greenfield are the three key aspects of this project. He said that they are adopting an area-based development approach in selected areas, including developing public infrastructure such as schools, parks, etc.
