KOLKATA: An employee of a private bank in Baguiati and one of his aide, who had siphoned off nearly Rs 3.2 crores from the account of a customer of the same bank in Chennai were convicted of the crime by a Barasat Court on Wednesday following a two year long trial that culminated in the Supreme Court. The court will spell out the quantum of punishment on Thursday.
Police said bank employee Bappaditya Biswas and his aide Samiran Saha were arrested and chargesheet was submitted by Cyber crime police in Bidhannagar on October 2020.
Special public prosecutor and cyber expert Bivas Chatterjee said Biswas had changed the registered mobile number and email id of the victim woman and got a duplicate Debit card and then used net banking to make multiple transactions and siphoned off Rs 3.21 crores.
“The money was siphoned off to eight accounts and during Investigation it was found that while five of the account holders had alerted the bank that they had received money that was unaccounted for the records, for three bank accounts registered under Saha showed that multiple debit card transactions had been made to withdraw money,” said Chatterjee.
The cops managed to track down Biswas and Saha using the CCTV footage sourced from inside the bank and based on electronic surveillance mounted on them. They were charged for offences punishable under Sections 419/420/468/469/471/409/120B/34 of IPC and they were convicted in terms of Section 235(2) of CrPC.
“Google translator was used to translate the Tamil and Telegu transcript along with the interpreter and Technology of Lunh Algorithm was introduced to explain the difference of the mobile IMEI no from which the crime was first committed. NATTing technology was explained in the court as to how the private IPs matched with public IPs,” explained Chatterjee.
Police said the duo had used numerous fake SIM, destroyed the router and other things to screen off their involvement. But they had made one mistake of handing over one of the cellphones used to commit the crime to one of Saha’s employees who later sold it off.
Biswas had approached the Apex Court for bail but the court directed the trial court at Barasat to complete the trial within 2 months.
