Thiruvananthapuram: Body of a 32-year-old woman was found naked at an abandoned building belonging to the Indian Railways near Kollam railway station, opposite Fatima Mata National College on Tuesday night.
The deceased has been identified as Uma Prasannan, a resident of Mamood near Mundankara Madan Temple at Kottankara in Elampalloor, who went missing on December 29, 2022. Her mother had registered a man-missing case at Kundara police station on December 30.
Preliminary findings by the forensic experts have ruled out murder or rape, as no injuries were found on her body. The building, where the body was found, was earlier a staff quarters for railway employees.
The police said Uma used to develop seizures and the forensic experts cited the possibility that she might have died due to that. However, a clear answer can be given only after receiving the test results of the internal organs, the police said.
Uma was working as a lottery ticket seller before she got a job in a private firm as a sales girl for door-to-door marketing of products two months ago. Her husband died in 2014. Other than her mother, she is survived by two daughters aged five and seven.
According to the complaint given by the mother, Uma went out of the house as usual for work on December 29, later when she tried to contact Uma in the evening on her mobile it was switched off.
Meanwhile, in a strange twist, on December 31 during patrolling at Kottiyam junction the police had seized Uma’s mobile phone from an Anchal native, Nazeem.
He had reportedly told police that he found the mobile at the beach. The police later handed it over to the mother of the deceased woman. Despite finding that the woman was missing, the Kottiyam police failed to investigate Nazeem’s role in the crime. According to reports, as a minor Nazeem was involved in some anti-social activities.
The Kollam East police are now planning to take Nazeem into custody for interrogation.
