Target Introduces Larger Store Concept With More Fulfillment Space and Merchandise


Target has introduced a larger-format store concept — nearly 150,000 square feet compared to the chain average of 130,000 square feet — that will become the retailer’s focus for new stores in the next few years. The new design, which features a more open layout and localized elements, will also be incorporated into future remodels across the chain.

The first new store concept recently opened outside of Houston, and Target plans to utilize the format in half of the 200 store remodels and almost all of the 30 new stores planned for 2023. Beginning in 2024, nearly all remodels and new stores will feature the majority of the reimagined store design elements, which include:

  • Full range of merchandise: The larger Target stores will offer shoppers expanded food and beverage options, exclusive brand partnerships and a curated mix of private labels and national brands;
  • More space: The new store layout includes a backroom fulfillment space that’s five times larger than previous stores of similar size to help support ongoing digital growth — stores fulfill more than 95% of the retailer’s digital orders and same-day services accounting for more than 10% of Target’s overall sales;
  • Enhanced team spaces: Modernized offices and team member spaces will provide flexible rooms that can be rearranged to serve the team’s varying needs and offer comfortable furniture options such as booth seating;
  • Built-in sustainability: The new store concept will include updates such as natural (CO2) refrigerants to help lower the retailer’s emissions and EV charging ports for its guests, with many locations including rooftop solar, in order to help Target reach its goal of net zero emissions by 2040;
  • Increased light and natural elements: Larger windows and a more open layout will bring in more natural light to help create a welcoming and inspiring space; and
  • Localized design features: Target will incorporate community-focused elements into each store’s design, from native landscaping outside the store to localized product selections inside.

With our reimagined store design and larger store footprint that better supports our same-day services, we can give guests more of what they love while incorporating features that build on our commitment to sustainability, community and helping all families discover the joy of everyday life.”

While Target will focus on larger stores in coming years, the retailer still plans to continue opening stores of all sizes, including its small footprint concepts.
