They also feel people may not understand what they are going through and feel utterly alone. In reality, it’s not just the depressed person who’s unable to communicate about their mental state, but also people may not always know the right things to say. ‘Think positive, ‘you can come out of this if you really wanted to’, ‘count your blessings’ are some of the things people tell depressed people. People with depression are often overpowered by emotions like shame, guilt and helplessness and do not want to bring these up in conversations. They may feel they will continue to go on like this for the rest of the life and do not want their loved ones to worry about them.

“Some may hide their symptoms because they don’t want their loved ones to worry. Others may feel too embarrassed to ask for help or struggle with perfectionism. Some may also feel guilty or ashamed for struggling to begin with, which are both common emotions that go hand-in-hand with depression, according to research,” says Dr Julie Smith, Clinical Psychologist and bestselling author in her recent Instagram post.

Dr Smith lists 5 things people with depression want to hide.

How lonely and isolated you feel: Not all feelings can be conveyed in words and the feeling of loneliness is one of them. People with depression may feel that others won’t understand their situation, and this do not talk about their mental state.

Hiding the sadness behind a smile: After a point, people like to fight their own battle with the disorder, and this is your way of telling others that you are feeling fine and do not want that extra attention.

How exhausted you truly feel: People may make extra efforts to look normal during depression and that can make them further exhausted.

You hide the psychological symptoms and only share the physical: People with depression may not like to mingle with people, but instead of telling the correct reason, they may say they are not well.

You hide the build-up of work you haven’t had the energy to do: Depressed people are so low on energy that they sometimes procrastinate daily chores. They however are not comfortable sharing this with you, so they hide that they are unable to manage all the piled-up work.

“In truth we all feel the strong urge to hide the things that make us feel most vulnerable. It feels like protection. But shame and loneliness thrive in the dark,” says Dr Smith.
